  • QUITO, July 20, 2011 (AFP) - Coach Reinaldo Rueda was ratified on Wednesday as coach of Ecuador, after the failure in the Copa America, announced the Ecuadorian Football Federation (Ecuafútbol).

"The Federation Board has decided to continue with the process, which has no other purpose than to present our team to play in the  2014 World Cup held in Brazil", said the President of Ecuafútbol, Luis Chiriboga.

The Colombian coach expressed satisfaction, saying that his dialogue with the leaders in Guayaquil was "fruitful" for him and the institution.

"Maybe this bitter time we are assimilating is helping to improve, from a means of commitment equal to or greater than ever we have made here in Ecuador", he said.

After the elimination of Argentina, Rueda emphasized that he was hired to sort out the Ecuadorian squad for the World Cup-2014 and to win the regional competition. Before the Copa America, which he officially debuted, the coach played 13 friendly matches, ending with two wins, seven draws and four defeats.

  • The record striking for a single Copa América edition is of nine goals. Three names share the top of the bill: Jair Rosa Pinto (Brazil, 1949), Humberto Maschio (Argentina, 1957), and Ambrois (Uruguay, also 1957).
